Unit 2 Lets play sports!

Reading (II)

I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, students are expected to be able to:

  1. retell the article;

  2. use the new words, phrases and sentence patterns properly;

    3. say something about their favourite player.

     

    II. Teaching contents

  3. New words and phrases: player, member, club, hope, dream, true, in ones free time, come true

  4. New structures: He is a new member of Huanghe Football Club.

    He looks strong and plays football very well.

    I hope his dream comes true.              

     

    III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty

    1. Understand the usages of the new words and phrases;

    2. Give a report on their groups favourite player.

    IV. Teaching procedures

    Step 1 Lead-in

    1. Read the text and finish the table.

    T: Boys and girls, in the last lesson, we learned an article about Simons heroLi Hua. Do you still remember what the article says?

    T: Good. Please open you books and turn to Page 20. Lets read aloud the article together. While you are reading, please pay attention to the details, because we need to finish this form later. Are you ready?

    T: Excellent! You read it very well. Now, shall we try to complete the form? Here is some information about Li Hua. You can first discuss with you partner if you want.

    2. Retell the text according to the table.

    T: Right. You did a good job! Now can you try to tell the article according to the table? I will give you one minute to prepare for it.

    【设计意图:通过提问昨天上课的内容,使学生迅速进入状态。通过集体朗读课文,并完成一张表格,激活对课文细节的记忆。接着通过让每位同学根据表格内容说一句话来复述课文的形式,为接下来呈现知识点以及最后的小组活动做好语言铺垫。】

    Step 2 Presentation

    T: Excellent! Here are some words, phrases and language points for you. Lets have a look at them one by one. Please take some notes down if necessary.

    1. Explain come from/be from.

    T: Li Hua comes from Guangdong. Come from, we can also say be from. We are from China. I will show you some pictures of people from different countries. Where are they from? Where do they come from? Have a guess.

    S1: He is from the UK. He comes from the UK.

    T: Yes. You are right. What about him?

    S2: He is from the USA. He comes from the USA.

    T: Thats right. What about them?

    S3: They are from Japan. They come from Japan.

    T: You are so clever.

    2. Explain “player.

    T: Li Hua is a football player. He has some friends. What are they? What do they do for a living?

    S1: Yao Ming is a basketball player.

    T: Yes. You are right. So he is good at playing basketball. What about him?

    S2: Lin Dan is a badminton player.

    T: Thats right. So he does well in playing badminton. What about her?

    S3: Feng Kun is a volleyball player.

    T: You are so clever. So she is good at playing volleyball.

    3. Explain a member of …”.

    T: Li Hua plays football well. He is a member of Huanghe Football Club. Can you put this sentence in another way?

    S1: He is in Huanghe Football Club. He plays for Huanghe Football Club.

    T: Good. Here is a sentence for you to translate. Who can?

    S2: Millie wants to be a new member of the school volleyball club.

    T: Excellent. Can you make a sentence with a member of …”?

    S3: Yao Ming played for Rocket. He was a member of Rocket.

    4. Explain “club.

    T: Do we have any club in our school? Are you a member of any club in our school? Lets look at some pictures. What club are they? Lets say them one by one.

    S1: Literature Club.

    S2: Music Club.

    S3: Drawing Club.

    S4: Dancing Club.

    S5: Singing Club.

    T: Excellent. You see. Our school life is so colourful because we have all kinds of clubs.

    5. Explain in ones free time/when somebody is free and the word free.

    T: Li Hua studies English and listens to the music in his free time. In ones free time, we can also say when somebody is free. Please say each sentence in two ways.

    S1: What do you usually do in your free time? What do you usually do when you are free?

    T: Very good. What about this one?

    S2: We go to the Dancing Club in our free time. We go to the Dancing Club when we are free.

     T: The word free has three meanings. Lets look at them one by one. If you want others to help, and you dont know if they are busy or not, you can ask: Are you free now? What does the word free mean here?

    S1: 空闲的.

    T: Right. The holiday is coming. The students are very happy because they are going to be free. What is the meaning of free here?

    S2:自由的.

    T: Good. You are very lucky today because you can get the lunch without () paying for it. That means: You can get the lunch for free. Can you understand the sentence?

    S3: 你可以免费得到午餐。

    T: Excellent. So free here means 免费的.

    6. Explain “enjoy.

    T: When Li Hua is free, he enjoys listening to music. Look at the word enjoy. We can say enjoy something or enjoy doing something. Enjoy doing something, we can also say like doing something or love doing something. Can you make a sentence with this phrase?

    S1: Millie enjoys playing the piano in her free time.

    T: We can also say

    S2: Millie likes playing the piano when she is free. Millie loves playing the piano in her free time.

    T: Very good.

    7. Explain listen to.

    T: Pay attention to the phrase listen to. Can you make some sentences?

    S1: Listen to me.

    S2: My grandpa listens to the radio every day.

    S3: Do you enjoy listening to music?

    8. Explain “dream.

    T: Li Huas dream is to play in the next World Cup. Here dream is a noun, and it is a countable noun. Who can make a sentence?

    S1: I have a dream.

    T: Good. Dream can also be a verb. Who can make a sentence?

    S2: I often dream of my grandpa.

    T: Very good.

    9. Explain “hope.

    T: We hope Li Huas dream comes true. Hope can be a verb. We can say hope to do something. Who can make a sentence?

    S1: She hopes to go to Beijing next summer.

    T: We can also put a sentence behind hope. Lets make a sentence.

    S2: I hope you (will) like this present.

    T: Excellent. Pay attention. Can we say hope sb. to do sth.? No, thats wrong. Hope can also be used as a noun. Who can make a sentence?

    S: There is no hope without a dream.

    T: Good! So all of us should have dreams.

    10. Explain come true.

    T: We all have dreams and we hope our dreams come true. Do you know the differences between true and real? True means 真实的;真诚的. Who can translate 一位真诚的朋友?

    S1: A true friend.

    T: Thats right. What about this one?

    S2: True or false? 正确还是错误?

    T: Good. Real means 真材实料的. Can you make a sentence?

    S3: One is a paper tiger; the other is a real tiger.

    11. Explain “look.

    T: Li Hua looks strong. We can also say look + adj.. How does Yang Ming look? What about the man on the right?

    S1: Yao Ming looks tall, and the man on the right looks short.

    T: Thats quite funny. Right? Here is a phrase look at. Can you make some sentences?

    S1: The teacher looks happily at us.

    S2: Please look at the blackboard carefully.

    T: Excellent.

    12. Explain “make.

    T: Playing football makes Li Hua happy. We have make sb. + adj.. Who can make a sentence?

    S1: The story makes us sad.

    T: Good. We can say make somebody do something. Can you make a sentence?

    S2: Dont make her stand all the time.

    T: Thats right. We also have make somebody not do something. Who can make a sentence?

    S3: Make the baby not cry.

    T: Very good.

    Step 3 Practice

    1. Finish Part B4.

    T: OK. Boys and girls, shall we complete some information about Li Hua? Please finish B4.

       Ask six students to check answers and then read together.

  5. Do more exercises.

  6. Fill in the blanks to complete the sentences.

    a. Eddie often eats five _____ (time) a day.

    b. We hope your dream _____ (come) true.

    c. Sandy enjoys _________ (swim) very much.

    d. Ronaldo is a famous football ______ (play).

  7. Translate the following sentences.

    a. 课堂上我们必须认真听老师讲。We ______________________ carefully in class.

    b. 什么使你高兴? What _____________________?

    c. 谁是你最喜爱的网球运动员?Who _____________________?

    d. 他哥哥看上去强壮。His brother ______________.

    Step 4 Activity

    Group work.

    T: Li Hua is Simons favourite football player. What is your favourite player? Can you talk about your favourite player? Please work in groups of four. Group 1, you talk about Yao Ming. Group 2, you talk about Lin Dan. Group 3, you talk about Feng Kun. Group 4, you talk about Sun Yang. Each group member says one sentence about your player. I will give you five minutes to get ready for it. And then the group will stand up and give us a speech on their player.

    V. Homework

    1. Recite the article about Li Hua;

    2. Review the words, phrases and language points;

    3. Write an article about your favourite player and share it with your friends.


反思:

在阅读第二课时中,重点为语言点的学习,通常学生会觉得相对枯燥。因此,通过创设采访情景,将语言点学习进行串联。每个语言点都配有不同形式的习题进行操练巩固,从半开放练习到开放练习,培养学生的发散性思维。
